Paying for medical care in China
Hospitals in China usually expect payment before or during treatment. Plan how you will pay before you travel.

Ask the hospital how it bills
Ask whether a deposit is needed on admission, which currency is charged, and where to pay. International departments sometimes have their own payment counter.
Have more than one way to pay
China's official guidance for visitors lists bank cards, mobile payment and cash in renminbi. Many overseas cards can be linked to Alipay or WeChat Pay, but limits and fees vary by card. For a large hospital bill, check in advance which methods the hospital accepts and tell your bank you will be paying abroad.
Insurance
Ask your insurer and the hospital separately, in writing, whether the treatment is covered, whether pre-approval is needed, and whether the hospital can bill the insurer directly or you pay first and claim later.
Keep every document
Keep itemised invoices, payment receipts, the discharge summary and prescriptions. Ask your insurer before you leave China which documents and formats it needs.
