Lung cancer treatment in China: planning a specialist review
Lung cancer treatment planning depends on pathology, stage, molecular findings, previous treatment and current health. A licensed oncology team must assess the case before any medicine or procedure is selected.

Why China for Lung Cancer
Ask the treating oncologist which molecular tests are appropriate. This guide does not establish a population percentage or a country-level advantage for any medicine or hospital.
Lung cancer types and China's treatment advantages by type
EGFR-mutant non-small cell lung cancer
For non-small cell lung cancer, discuss pathology and molecular test results with the oncologist. The testing plan and treatment depend on the individual case.
- 1st/2nd generation EGFR inhibitors (gefitinib, erlotinib, afatinib) — widely available, discuss the exact product and approved indication with the treating oncologist
- Ask a licensed physician to confirm which options are appropriate for the diagnosis, prior treatment and current condition. Availability, eligibility, benefits and risks require case-specific hospital assessment.
- Osimertinib (Tagrisso) is also available in China as an imported option, at higher cost
PD-L1-high / EGFR-negative NSCLC
Early-stage or surgically unsuitable lung cancer
Ask a radiation oncologist whether stereotactic radiotherapy is appropriate, which alternatives are available, and what risks, appointments and monitoring the proposed course involves.
Small cell lung cancer (SCLC)
Small cell lung cancer requires a specific oncology assessment. Ask the treating team to explain the proposed treatment, evidence, risks and follow-up.
The genomic testing imperative
Bring any previous pathology and molecular reports. The treating oncologist determines which additional tests, if any, are needed; request a written estimate before testing.
Treatment costs: China vs Southeast Asia
Request an itemised written estimate from the hospital for your specific diagnosis and plan. Include medicines, tests, admission, follow-up and travel costs; generic country-level price comparisons are not a personal quotation.
Which hospital for lung cancer?
Both Shanghai and Foshan offer strong lung cancer programmes with different strengths:
- Confirm its current oncology services, proposed clinician, language support and availability with the hospital.
Common questions from lung cancer patients
I've already started chemotherapy at home. Can I switch to targeted therapy in China?
My EGFR inhibitor has stopped working. What options does China have?
Is CyberKnife suitable for lung cancer with brain metastases?
A radiation oncologist must assess whether stereotactic radiotherapy is suitable for the individual case. Ask about the proposed target, evidence, risks, alternatives and the care needed for disease elsewhere in the body.
Can I bring oral targeted therapy drugs back to Malaysia or Singapore?
Before transporting any medicine, check the destination country’s customs, medicines regulator and carrier requirements for the exact product and quantity. A hospital prescription alone does not establish import permission.
