Gastroenterology treatment in China: planning questions

Gastrointestinal and liver conditions require different specialist routes. Prepare the diagnosis, endoscopy, pathology, imaging and prior treatment records before asking a hospital to assess the next step.

Why Gastroenterology in China

Check each hospital’s published gastroenterology, hepatology and oncology services. The treating team must determine which department and options are suitable for the case.

Gastrointestinal conditions and China's treatment options

Gastric (stomach) cancer

Ask the specialist which options are relevant to the pathology, stage and current condition, and what additional tests are needed before deciding on treatment.

  • Ask a licensed physician to confirm which options are appropriate for the diagnosis, prior treatment and current condition. Availability, eligibility, benefits and risks require case-specific hospital assessment.
  • Request an itemised written estimate from the hospital for your specific diagnosis and plan. Include medicines, tests, admission, follow-up and travel costs; generic country-level price comparisons are not a personal quotation.

Colorectal cancer

Colorectal cancer planning should follow the individual diagnosis, stage, imaging, pathology and specialist assessment.

  • Total mesorectal excision (TME) with sphincter preservation for rectal cancer
  • Ask a specialist team to explain whether liver metastasis surgery or another approach is appropriate, with the risks and alternatives for the case.
  • Targeted therapy: KRAS/BRAF mutation testing and appropriate bevacizumab or cetuximab regimens

Liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma)

Ask a liver specialist to explain the available options, risks and eligibility for the patient’s specific condition.

  • TACE (transarterial chemoembolisation) — interventional radiology-based treatment for inoperable liver tumours
  • Ablation — radiofrequency, microwave, or cryoablation for small tumours

Inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's, ulcerative colitis)

For inflammatory bowel disease, ask a qualified specialist to assess the diagnosis, previous treatment and ongoing monitoring needs. Medicine availability and suitability require hospital confirmation.

Pancreatic and biliary conditions

For pancreatic or biliary conditions, ask the relevant surgical and medical teams to review the records and explain the proposed approach, risks, alternatives and aftercare.

Planning an endoscopy assessment

The hospital decides whether endoscopy, biopsy or a therapeutic procedure is appropriate and whether they can occur in the same visit. Confirm preparation, timing, risks and costs with the treating team.

Cost comparison

Which hospital for gastroenterology?

  • Ask the hospital and your insurer separately, in writing, about payment methods, coverage, pre-authorisation and reimbursement documents. Coverage and hospital acceptance are subject to their confirmation.
  • Confirm its current gastroenterology services, language support and appointment requirements for the individual case.

Common questions

I was told my liver tumour is inoperable. Is it worth getting a second opinion in China?

What should I ask about endoscopic and surgical options?

My colonoscopy found polyps. Do I need to come to China for that?

Ask the treating gastroenterologist to assess the endoscopy and pathology findings and explain whether local care, further tests or a specialist opinion is appropriate. WELLIN does not decide whether a procedure or international travel is medically necessary.
