How to judge whether a hospital in China suits your case

Rankings and a hospital's reputation tell you little about whether it can help one particular patient. These are the questions that matter.

WELLIN Patient Care Team. Updated 29 October 2026.

1. Does the right department treat this condition?

Ask which department and which team would see the patient, and whether they regularly treat this diagnosis at this stage. A strong hospital overall may not be the strongest for every condition.

2. Will they review records before you travel?

A hospital that reviews the records first can tell you whether the trip is worthwhile. Be cautious about any arrangement that asks you to travel before anyone has looked at the case.

3. How does it look after international patients?

Many hospitals in China have an international department with English-speaking staff, separate appointments and payment counters. Ask whether the specialist you need sees patients through that department, and how interpretation works on the wards.

4. Will it give a written quote?

Ask for an itemised estimate in writing, and what happens to the cost if the plan changes or complications arise.

5. What happens after discharge?

Ask what documents the patient leaves with, how follow-up is handled after going home, and who to contact with questions.

Official information

China's national health authority publishes information on hospital services; see Official hospital information (English). Hospital-specific details, such as appointment routes and prices, need to be confirmed with the hospital itself.
