Visas and entry for travel to China

The rules depend on the patient's passport, the purpose of the trip and the itinerary. Only the Chinese embassy, consulate or immigration authority decides; this guide shows what to check.

WELLIN Patient Care Team. Updated 29 October 2026.

Start with the passport

Check the current rules on the website of the Chinese embassy, consulate or visa centre that handles applications where you live. Some nationalities can enter China without a visa for short stays; others need one. Rules change, so check close to the date.

The hospital invitation letter and visa decision

We help you obtain the hospital's invitation letter. Visa decisions are made by the Chinese embassy or consulate. Flights, hotels and visa application services are arranged through licensed travel and visa partners.

Transit is not the same as visa-free entry

China's 240-hour visa-free transit applies only to travellers passing through China to a third country or region, with an onward ticket. A return trip between home and China does not qualify.

The hospital letter

A hospital appointment letter supports a visa application, but it does not mean a visa will be granted. We help request this letter once the hospital has accepted the case.

Before booking flights

  • Get the hospital's written appointment or acceptance first
  • Confirm which documents the consulate needs, and allow time for its decision
  • Check the companion's entry rules separately
  • Book flights that can be changed, in case treatment dates move
