CAR-T therapy in China: questions for patients and families
For patients and families exploring CAR-T therapy in China, start with the diagnosis, prior treatment and a licensed haematology team’s assessment. A hospital must confirm product suitability, eligibility, risks and costs before travel.

Planning note
Request an itemised written estimate from the hospital for your specific diagnosis and plan. Include medicines, tests, admission, follow-up and travel costs; generic country-level price comparisons are not a personal quotation.
What is CAR-T therapy?
CAR-T is a form of cell-based immunotherapy. Ask a licensed haematologist to explain the relevant product, approved indication, possible benefits, serious risks and alternatives for the individual case.
CAR-T is not suitable for every cancer or patient. For the diagnoses below, ask the haematologist whether a specific product is approved and appropriate for the case:
- B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) — ask the haematologist about product-specific eligibility, evidence, risks and alternatives.
- Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) — ask the haematologist about product-specific eligibility, evidence, risks and alternatives.
- Multiple myeloma — ask the haematologist about product-specific eligibility, evidence, risks and alternatives.
- Follicular lymphoma and other B-cell lymphomas — ask the haematologist about product-specific eligibility, evidence, risks and alternatives.

CAR-T cost comparison
Ask the treating hospital to identify the exact CAR-T product and provide its current regulatory status, approved indication, evidence, risks and written price. Do not infer equivalent outcomes from a country-level comparison.
What the process looks like for overseas patients
Remote eligibility assessment
Prepare pathology, flow cytometry, bone marrow findings, treatment history and any prior cell therapy or transplant records. A licensed haematology team determines whether assessment or treatment is appropriate; WELLIN can help organise the enquiry.
T-cell collection (leukapheresis)
If the treating hospital recommends CAR-T, ask it to explain cell collection, manufacturing, quality checks and any care needed while waiting. Travel and clinical timing are set by the treating team.
Lymphodepletion chemotherapy + infusion
The treating hospital determines whether preparatory treatment and infusion are appropriate and explains admission and monitoring requirements, including the management of serious adverse effects.
Follow-up monitoring
Ask the treating team for an individual monitoring and follow-up plan, including which care can take place locally and how records will reach the patient’s clinician at home.
Important considerations
Is domestic Chinese CAR-T as effective as Western products?
Ask the licensed haematology team for the exact product’s current approved label, indication, study evidence, risks and alternatives. This guide does not establish equivalent outcomes across products or countries.
Can I get a CAR-T assessment without committing to treatment in China?
Yes. The remote eligibility assessment is the appropriate first step and carries no treatment commitment. Many families use the remote assessment to obtain a second opinion on their treatment options — some proceed with treatment in China, others use the information to inform decisions about treatment elsewhere.
What if my family member is too unwell to travel?
CAR-T requires in-person T-cell collection in China — this cannot be done remotely. However, well-managed disease with adequate performance status is a prerequisite for CAR-T eligibility regardless of location. The remote assessment will evaluate whether the patient is in a suitable clinical state for the procedure.
What should I ask my insurer before booking?
Ask the hospital and your insurer separately, in writing, about payment methods, coverage, pre-authorisation and reimbursement documents. Coverage and hospital acceptance are subject to their confirmation.
